With the name Sweet Potato Soul, you can trust that sweet potatoes are square in my area of expertise. Baking, air-frying, roasting, simmering, braising, pan-frying, and more — if there’s a method for preparing sweet potatoes, I’ve mastered it!

When it comes to nutrition, these jewel-toned tubers are all-stars. They are rich in vitamins like A and C, fiber, minerals, and antioxidants (source), and are considered a healthy source of complex carbohydrates, which can help to stabilize blood sugar (source).
One medium-sized sweet potato clocks in at 100 calories, with most of those coming from carbohydrates (source). They offer a modest 2 grams of plant protein and are low in sodium, with just 41 mg each (source). All in all, sweet potatoes are a very nutritious and solid addition to any diet.


Sweet Potato Types
There are multiple sweet potato varieties, but the most common ones are the deep orange-fleshed ones, such as Jewel and Garnet. Most of the recipes below feature these potatoes, but an occasional one will call for the white-fleshed and purple-skinned Japanese sweet potatoes.
When shopping for sweet potatoes, choose those that are heavy for their size and have smooth, deep-colored skin. Avoid those with blemishes or spongy spots. To clean them, scrub sweet potatoes under cool water with a towel or vegetable brush until the water runs clear.
