vegetable garden troubleshooting

vegetable garden troubleshooting
This pak choi has bolted to seed.

With the title of this week’s video, you might fear a lot of things can go wrong with a garden. For the most part, we have minimal problems because we really stay in tune with what’s going on out there. It’s so important that we gardeners engage in a bit of vegetable garden troubleshooting to nip problems in the bud.

This means monitoring your garden on a regular basis so you catch problems right away. This can include the plants not getting enough water, noticing some insect damage, or determining why a plant is struggling.

Here’s what I’ll cover in my vegetable garden troubleshooting video:

  • Why monitoring your garden is so important.
  • Why you really need to keep up with the weeding. (trust me, it will benefit you in the long run!)
  • How I approach insect issues.
  • How I keep critters away from my small seedlings. This primarily centers around the California quail in our garden. They love nibbling on freshly-sprouted seeds and young plants.
  • Why you should give your tomato plants good support. And why you want to prevent their lowest leaves from touching the ground.
  • And last but not least, how to deal with warm weather. Here in Spokane, Wash., this is especially relevant because our daytime highs skyrocketed earlier in the week.

I know I tend to harp on the importance of keeping an eye on your garden. That’s because I speak from personal experience over many, many years! Nipping problems in the bud (no pun intended) makes all the difference.

In addition, even though my video isn’t a ploy to sell my books, remember that I know what I’m talking about. I’m the author of “The Vegetable Garden Pest Handbook,” which is all about insects in your veggie garden. And I’m referring to both damaging insects and beneficial insects. This book came about because I kept trying to locate an easy-to-use and understand book that I could recommend to my followers. But I didn’t have any luck. The existing books were about all kinds of insects or too “sciency” for gardeners to understand. I finally realized that I was going to have to write my own book! My pest handbook has been a bestseller since day one and it’s gotten nearly 600 wonderful reviews.

Once that book was out, I wrote a companion book called “The Vegetable Garden Problem Solver Handbook.” This one covers the other types of challenges vegetable gardeners face. It includes plant disorders, plant diseases, dealing with extreme weather conditions, tips for garden success, critters in the garden. By “critters,” I mean things like chipmunks, squirrels, deer, mice, gophers, raccoons, opossums, voles and so on.

In both books, I provide organic solutions because that is so important, especially when growing your own food. I have links to both books in my Amazon store under the “Susan’s Books” category. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a commission from qualifying purchases but that won’t impact the price you pay in the least.
