Is this your first season to grow garlic? Or have you been puzzled about the right time to harvest garlic? Well, I’ve got a new video to help you out!
Here’s what you’ll learn:
- The two main types of garlic
- What to look for on the plants so you know if it’s time to harvest garlic
- How to carefully dig up your plants so you won’t damage them (which will affect their storage life)
- Where to let the plants dry out
- What to do to the plants when they’re totally dry
- The ideal setting for storing your garlic bulbs in the coming months
As I mention in the video, fall is the best time to plant garlic. Then you harvest it the following summer. If you planted yours this spring, that’s OK, too. You probably won’t end up with large bulbs of cloves, but it’s certainly still yummy!
Bill and I are especially fond of hardneck garlic. That’s because it develops large cloves within the bulbs. Softneck garlic produces smaller cloves but more of them in each bulb. If you’re wondering about elephant garlic, I have a surprise for you! It isn’t technically a garlic plant, but rather a member of the leek family. (I know, tomato/tomahto) The bulbs have a milder, sweeter flavor that is absolutely delicious. But for today, we’re focusing on regular garlic.
If you really want to start growing garlic, I’ve got you covered. You’ll find my video on the process underneath the garlic harvesting video below. It is packed with helpful information!
