The topic for this week’s video is The “5 Most Productive Vegetable Crops You Should Grow!” Why did I choose to focus on this?
- Perhaps you’re considering growing your very first vegetable garden next year, but you’re not sure what to grow
- Maybe you’re still fairly new to gardening but have been disappointed with your harvests
- You might also be disgusted with the price of produce these days
My goal for this video was to focus on the crops that give you the most bang for your buck. While preparing for this video, I strolled through my garden to choose the 5 that would make the cut. But it really wasn’t hard because we’ve had a lot of experience in this! Here’s what I chose:
- Beans (both pole and bush)
- Tomatoes
- Onions
- Peppers (both hot and sweet)
- Summer squash (this includes zucchini, pattypan, trombone zucchini and more)
Some background:
Bill and I have been growing our own food for many, many years. We love incorporating fresh produce into our everyday meals. But perhaps even more importantly, we store a lot of what we grow to feed us during the off-season. We grow all sorts of productive vegetable crops but the most productive are those listed above. All of those crops give us so many harvests of the types of food we love to eat.
In addition to the above crops, we also grow corn, celery, broccoli, peas, garlic, melons and salad greens. Don’t get me wrong: those are very much appreciated as well! But if you really want your garden to feed you, I felt it was worth focusing on those 5 crops.
What do I cover in this week’s video?
- Variety recommendations for each crop. These lists are the results of many years of trying to find the best ones.
- Growing tips such as providing the right kind of support for certain crops. Or the frequency of harvesting.
- You’ll see how each of these crops are growing in our garden.
- And at the end of the video, I share some helpful resources. These include safe food preservation information and a wonderful website with fresh recipes to try. You’ll also discover that I have a section on this very website called “Preserving the Harvest.” You’ll discover how we like to preserve different types of veggies and fruits. And you’ll learn how to choose the right onion varieties for your region of the country. That makes all the difference!
