adaptive gardening

adaptive gardening, raised beds
Tall raised beds make gardening a breeze!

I’ve had a few requests for a video on how to keep gardening as we age. That is a great topic! So this week’s video is all about adaptive gardening.

If you’re not familiar with that term, it refers to making small changes so you can continue to enjoy gardening. What types of changes, you ask?

Here are some examples:

  • Staying active
  • Strengthening your core so you can prevent back injuries
  • Being careful not to lift too much
  • Avoiding bending at your hips while standing, and then reaching down to the ground
  • Good body mechanics for lifting, carrying and setting down the heavier stuff
  • Alternating the types of gardening activities after a *reasonable* period of time
  • It’s OK to ask for help!
  • Staying off ladders
  • Eliminating trip hazards
  • Adding handrails to sloping gardens
  • The importance of sun protection

CobraHead tools are awesome!

As you can see, I gave this topic of adaptive gardening a lot of thought. That’s because I want this video to be useful! Once I covered those topics, I switched gears to the types of tools that make gardening easier. As I explain in the video, my goal wasn’t to sell you a bunch of stuff. I wanted you to know about these products, which I personally use just about every day.

I will never recommend a tool or product that I haven’t used. And let me just add that I’m pretty particular about how tools work!

That said, I do have an Amazon Store to make it easy to look at these different tools. The items I demonstrated in the video can be found under the “Gardening Hand Tools” and “Gardener’s Must-Haves” categories. As an Amazon Associate, I earn a commission from qualifying purchases. However, that won’t impact the price you pay at all.

Here’s is my Adaptive Gardening for Any Age video:

I hope you enjoyed this video! Did you know I have 638 videos on my YouTube channel now? I know, that’s crazy! But I’ve been doing this for 11 years now because it’s a great way to teach about all aspects of gardening.
