This beauty is a native witch hazel.

What a gorgeous fall we’ve been experiencing! I just love those fall colors. Over the past 35 years, we’ve been planting trees and shrubs that have beautiful fall foliage. Boy has that been worth it!

I suddenly realized that a lot of folks might want to add more beautiful fall colors to their gardens, too. So that’s where the idea for this video came from. In it, you’ll get to see 25 wonderful trees, shrubs and perennials that really pop this time of year.

Let’s start with a bit of history first. Bill and I live on 5 acres in a rural area of Spokane, Wash. When we bought our lot, there was only one tiny pine tree on it and that was it.

Since we are bird-lovers and birdwatchers, we decided to plant with the goal of attracting more birds. A lot of the trees and shrubs are native plants. Those are a spectacular choice for any landscape. We’ve done a lot of planting over the years and our garden has become a haven for birds.

But the bonus is that most of them also have foliage that provides us with glorious fall colors. No complaints there!

My goal for this video is to inspire you with ideas for increasing the fall colors in your own landscape.

Here’s my video about adding fall colors to your garden:

And here is a list of the plants, just so you have it all in once place. If you see an asterisk after the name, it also produces fruits for the birds. And if there’s an exclamation point, it’s a native plant, too.
