If you are really tired of winter, I have just what you need! My newest video focuses on wonderful perennial flowers that are sure to brighten your outlook.
I love growing annuals and perennials. While I love both, perennials are a great deal because they come back year after year. As I explain in the video, annual flowers will bloom, set seed and die in a single growing season. Now don’t get me wrong, because annuals are amazing. But I felt you might like to see the perennials we get to enjoy every year.
All of them are hardy down to USDA hardiness zone 5. I put together a slideshow of these plants, and each slide is labeled. The interesting thing is that most U.S. gardeners tend to know plants by their common name. For example, there’s a lovely spring bloomer called Columbine that I’m sure many of you grow. But did you know its scientific name is Aquilegia?
Yet there are some perennial flowers where it’s the exact opposite. You probably know and love Penstemon, right? (see photo at left) Yet its common name is Beardtongue, which I don’t think many folks know. It can get confusing and that’s exactly why I included both the common and scientific (or Latin) name.
In many other countries, gardeners tend to be more familiar with the scientific/Latin name.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the variety (cultivar) name for all of the photos. I’ve been growing some for ages and there are so many similar-looking varieties. I certainly didn’t want to make a mistake or lead you astray by guessing. But this will at least give you a starting point. If there had been more room on each slide, I would’ve included the heights and light requirements for each plant. But my goal was to let you see each plant, learn its I.D. and then go from there. Well, OK, my main goal was to let you enjoy the beauty of each one!
