landscape redesign

landscape redesign
Here’s what the landscape bed looked like before I got started on this project.

Did you know that fall is an excellent time to make changes to your garden and add new plants? That’s why I’m doing a landscape redesign in our back garden. And it’s the focus of this week’s video as well as next week’s.

Why do I need to do a landscape redesign?

  • We first created the bed in 2003.
  • A young hawthorn tree was our choice to be the “anchor” of the bed. Boy, has it grown!
  • Because the tree’s canopy is larger, there are a few more shady areas.
  • That means sun-loving plants aren’t getting the light they need, so they’re now very lanky.
  • Some of the original plants have turned out to be “thugs.” They have spread and are shading the plants I really like.

I have to admit I’ve been dreading this project. But I’m also excited about it. After all, every gardener loves buying new plants, right? And this time of year, there are great sales at nurseries and garden centers. I’ve tried really hard to make GOOD choices.

There was so much information to cover about this garden design. I decided to break this topic into two separate videos. Here’s what’s in this week’s:

  • You’ll see how our back landscape came about due to a problem with our original lawn. Every problem can be turned into something positive, right?
  • I’ll show you the landscape bed and explain which plants are the troublemakers.
  • You’ll also see plants that I’m happy with. Although in some instances, I’ll need to make a few changes. One example is moving a sun-loving plant from it’s now-shady location to one with more light.
  • I list important considerations to follow when choosing new plants for your garden.
  • Then I get down and dirty by starting to dig up problem plants. Boy, was that a job!
  • You’ll see how the bed demolition is looking at that point (about 45% finished)

What’s in next week’s video?

  • You’ll see the results of all of my “demolition” in the bed
  • I’ll show you the plants I’ve bought for this bed and explain why I chose them
  • Then I’ll go through the process of picking locations for each and planting them

I hope you’ll enjoy the first part of my Landscape Bed Re-do!
